Fasten Your DOS Printing

By VJ | Jun 20, 2007

If you are experiencing slow prints from your Printer, specially with Dot Matrix Printers, then that can be Fastened easily. You just need to make some changes in Registry, and after that you will see the result. Just follow these steps.

  1. Go to Start –> Run, Type “Regedit”, without Quotes.
  2. Go to Path Hkey_Local_Machine –> System –> CurrentControlSet –> Control –> WOW.
  3. Now on the other side, look for LPT_timeout. Change its value from 15 to 3.
  4. Fast DOS Print

You will definitely feel a great increase in speed of Printers. It is effective if you are using windows 2K+.

The LPT_Timeout parameter is only present in NT based OS’s (2K, XP, …). You’ll not find it in Win9x.

Please note also that by setting it too low you can experience your DOS job spooled before the DOS program has really finished creating the print job (so you’ll end up with a partially printed job). Each user should search which is the correct value for his own DOS program.

All this is not necessary if the DOS program itself takes care to CLOSE the output device (usually LPT1:) after printing to it. This fix is not so difficult for most DOS programs.

    Kind regards,
