Creating a FAT Partition more than 32GB

By VJ | Nov 1, 2007

Today, when I tried to format a 40 GB partition in FAT32, I was not able to perform that as Windows XP Setup allowed me to format it only in NTFS. It seemed like there was no option for me to convert all the drives to NTFS, but I was able to perform the format for a 40 GB partition in FAT32 with some R&D. Here’s what I did.

  • I decided to try it with the old Windows 98 FDISK format tool.
  • Created and Formatted all the partitions and gave a reboot.
  • Reboot the machine with the Windows XP disk, and Installed XP.

That’s it, its as simple as anything. Later I found that XP wont allow user to create partition in FAT if they are more than 32 GB, but here is a solution you too can try to make bigger FAT partitions.
I tried to create a 100 GB partition, and I was able to perform the task. Its said that the maximum size FAT can support is 2TB, But has anybody tried it?
