Changing User Password Through DOS

By VJ | Nov 15, 2007

To change the user password through DOS, you should be logged in as a Administrator, or with administrative privileges.

Now perform the mentioned steps:-

  • Go to Start –> Run, type CMD and press enter.
  • Type in “net user“, press enter, and you will see all the users list.
  • Choose the username you want to change password for.
  • now type in “net user username *” OR “net user username password“.
  • If you type in “net user username *” it will ask you to enter password, Enter password very carefully as it wont even show asterisk’s, and reconfirm the password.
  • If you enter “net user username password” it will change it and show you the summary. You will see the password in asterisk’s.
  • You are now done with it, and you have complete control over the account, after all its the password what matters all.

I must tell you that this is not a trick to hack into one’s computer. However if you get a chance to work on your administrator’s computer, with all the privileges, you can always go ahead and try to change the admin password, putting you boss in trouble :D. But, I wont be responsible for the outcomes you face.

In some XP versions, there is a hole by which using this trick, you can change the administrator password from within a guest or limited account. I have tried that myself, but unfortunately, I didn’t know how to see the version :(

To know the version of windows, you need to type in “winver” in run , and you will be able to see the version.
The security hole you mentioned, used to be there, but its now repaired in XP SP2

I tried it on 4 different computers and it works better when you hit F8 when the computer is starting up. All you have to do is go in through the ADM user if it is not passworded and do the same thing.
